  • Corpse Flower Blooms!!
  • Bruce Turner, will be a member of the Devils Hole Pupfish (cyprinodon diabolis) recovery team, consulting on efforts to restore genetic variation in natural and refugium populations of this highly endangered species. Due to recent events, there are now fewer than 40 fish in the natural population, and emergency plans have been activated.

  • Jill Sible, has been selected as an Edward Singleton Diggs Teaching Scholar, a university honor of high distinction. The Edward S. Diggs Teaching Scholar Awards were established in 1992 to recognize outstanding teaching and exceptional contributions to the teaching program and learning environment. The Diggs Scholars are dedicated to promoting excellence, imagination and commitment to teaching and student learning.
  • Wes Black, a PhD grad from Zhaomin Yang's lab and now a postdoc with Zhaomin, was recently selected for a Sigma Xi research award at Virginia Tech.

  • Brian Olsen, a Ph.D. student working with Jeff Walters, was very recently recognized with an Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Commendation Award from the grad school. Brian has made many contributions to our teaching, most notably with ornithology lab and lecture. To prepare for the ornithology lecture course, Brian took the grad school pedagogy course and received mentoring from Jeff Walters. He did an outstanding job. We congratulate Brian for his excellent contributions not only in teaching, but also in research and outreach where he has made strong impacts well beyond the university.

    Cutting Edge Molecular Analysis Equipment Provided by PPD, Inc.
    Virginia tech students will soon benefit from the hands-on experience they will gain through the use of two brand new mass spectrometers.  The instruments (two Sciex API 3200 mass spectrometers valued at over $500,000) were a recent corporate gift from PPD, Inc. to the Department of Biological Sciences.  They are capable of identifying small to large molecules in biological samples, even if present in trace quantities, and will be located in a biological sciences research lab in Derring Hall.  More...     Ignacio Moore received a prestigious National Science Foundation Career award for young investigators. This 5-year grant will support his research of reproduction in tropical birds, and the development an undergraduate study abroad ecology course in the Andes Mountains and Galapagos Islands of Ecuador. Dr. Moore earned a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Arizona in 1994 and a PhD in Zoology from Oregon State University in 1999.  Following postdoctoral training at the University of Washington, he joined the VT faculty in 2004.  Dr. Moore’s central research theme is the interaction between hormone systems, behavior, and reproduction in vertebrates.

    Dr. Duncan Porter has been selected for the , 2006 by the Science Museum of Virginia. This is in recognition of Duncan's many contributions to plant systematics and the history of science, the latter involving his long time association with (and current directorship of) the Darwin Correspondence Project at Cambridge University.
