While on this campus, Adkisson served as Assistant Professor of Zoology (1972-78), then Associate Professor of Zoology (1978-2002). He also served as Curator of Birds from 1972 and as Adjunct Associate Professor of Fisheries and Wildlife (1969-2002). In 1979-80 he was appointed Research Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Of the many classes taught by Curt, he especially enjoyed inspiring students in Ornithology and Evolutionary Biology. Curt officially retired in 2002.

In retirement, Adkisson continues collaborative studies of birds, especially in Florida and other parts of the eastern U.S.
